Girmay Tesfay is an Ethiopian national. His area of expertise is in agricultural and natural resources economics with a policy and development focus. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Agricultural Economics in August 1993 from Alemaya University of Agriculture, Ethiopia. He completed his M.Sc. in Rural Resources Management at Bangor College, the University of North Wales, UK, in March 1996. He completed his PhD studies in Social Sciences (in Development Economics and Policy) from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, in December 2006. He has more than ten years of experience in Teaching, Research and Management of projects at Mekelle University.

His area of teaching and research interest include rural development policy, natural resources management, farm management and agricultural extension, agricultural economics and marketing, sustainable development, impact assessment related to irrigation development and conservation projects and biofuel development. He is currently running a project on scaling up of best agricultural practices to enhance agricultural production in potential areas of southern Tigray.  Girmay has been collaborating with UCC on the joint M.Sc. program in Rural Development and currently is the principal investigator for the AgriDiet project from Mekelle University side.

Within AgriDiet, Girmay is the Principal Investigator for Mekelle University, leading the meso-level research under Work Package 4 and  the review of pro-nutrition agricultural interventions in Work Package 6, as well as advisory inputs on the country reviews (WP2), methodology (WP3) and stakeholder platforms (WP7)
